Avidnote vs ChatGPT for Research: What Each Is Good For
Short version: ChatGPT is a general assistant that can do almost anything a little. Avidnote is a research workspace: it answers from the papers you upload, cites the passage, keeps your notes and drafts with those papers, and stores everything in the EU without using it to train models. For a quick explanation, use ChatGPT. For the paper you are writing, use Avidnote.
What ChatGPT does
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general chatbot. It explains concepts, drafts and rewrites text, writes code and answers questions on anything. You can upload files and group work into projects. The free tier is generous; Plus is $20 a month at the time of writing. Its weakness for research is well known: ask it for sources from memory and it will sometimes invent authors, titles and journals that do not exist.
What Avidnote does
Avidnote is an AI workspace for research. You upload papers, ask questions and get answers cited to the passage they came from, take notes beside the PDF, draft with writing templates, analyse data and transcribe interviews. Data is stored in the EU and is not used to train AI models. The free plan includes 20,000 AI words a month; paid plans start at $19 a month. It uses large language models too, but every answer about your papers is grounded in the PDF and cited to the passage, so you can check it in one click.

When to pick ChatGPT
Explaining a method you do not understand, brainstorming, rewriting an email, writing a quick script. Anything where a wrong detail costs you little and you can check it yourself.
When to pick Avidnote
Anything that ends up in your thesis or paper. You need to know where each claim came from, keep the notes that led to it, and be able to say truthfully how AI was used. If your ethics approval or data agreement restricts where interview data or unpublished results can go, EU hosting and no training on your data matter.
Using AI honestly
Whichever you use, most journals and universities now ask you to say how. Our free AI-use disclosure statement generator writes that statement in the publisher's wording, and how to cite ChatGPT covers the citation formats.
