Avidnote vs Notion for Research Notes: Which One Fits?

Short version: Notion is a general workspace you can shape into anything, including a reading log. Avidnote is already shaped for research: the PDF, your notes on it, AI answers cited to the page, writing templates and data analysis sit together without any setup. If you enjoy building systems, Notion is flexible. If you want to read and write papers, Avidnote is faster.

What Notion does

Notion is a workspace for notes, documents, databases and team wikis. Researchers use it for reading logs, project boards and lab notebooks. The free plan covers individuals; Plus is $10 and Business $20 per member per month, and Notion AI is sold as credits (at the time of writing). It has no PDF reader for annotation, no citation-aware AI and no reference management.

What Avidnote does

Avidnote is an AI workspace for research. You upload papers, ask questions and get answers cited to the passage they came from, take notes beside the PDF, draft with writing templates, analyse data and transcribe interviews. Data is stored in the EU and is not used to train AI models. The free plan includes 20,000 AI words a month; paid plans start at $19 a month.

When to pick Notion

You want one place for everything in your life and work, including teaching, admin and a reading list, and you are happy to design the structure yourself.

When to pick Avidnote

Your bottleneck is reading and writing papers. You want to open a PDF, ask it what it found, see the page, take a note and move on, and later turn those notes into a draft with citations. You want that to work on day one.

Can you use both?

Yes. Many researchers keep planning and admin in Notion and do the reading and writing in Avidnote. Avidnote exports drafts to Word and PDF, which you can link from a Notion page. See also our guide on the best way to organise your research.
