Avidnote vs Zotero: Reference Manager or AI Research Workspace?
Short version: Zotero collects and cites references, and does it very well for free. Avidnote is where you read the papers, take notes, ask questions with cited answers, write and analyse data. They overlap on PDF annotation and reference storage, but they are different tools, and many researchers use both.
What Zotero does
Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager. It captures references from your browser, stores PDFs, has a built-in PDF reader with highlights and notes, and inserts citations and bibliographies into Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice in thousands of styles. Syncing is free with 300 MB of file storage; more storage costs $20 a year for 2 GB, $60 for 6 GB or $120 for unlimited (at the time of writing). It has no AI features of its own, though community plugins add some.
What Avidnote does
Avidnote is an AI workspace for research. You upload papers, ask questions and get answers cited to the passage they came from, take notes beside the PDF, draft with writing templates, analyse data and transcribe interviews. Data is stored in the EU and is not used to train AI models. The free plan includes 20,000 AI words a month; paid plans start at $19 a month.

When to pick Zotero
You need a reference library and perfect bibliographies in Word, and you do not want AI involved. Zotero is the standard for a reason.
When to pick Avidnote
You want to understand papers faster, keep notes attached to them, ask a paper what it found and get the page, draft sections with templates, or analyse data and interviews. Avidnote manages references too, but that is not the reason to choose it.
Can you use both?
Yes, and this is the most common setup. Keep Zotero as the system of record for references and bibliographies. Upload the papers you are actively reading to an Avidnote project for notes, questions and writing. Avidnote exports to Word, so you can finish the citations in Zotero's plugin. See our older comparison with Mendeley for the same point about reference managers.
